Girls remain woefully outnumbered in African schools. In a UNESCO report titled "Education For All", Sub-Saharan Africa has been identified as one of the regions that have the widest gender disparity in terms of education; two out of three of the 110 million children who do not attend school are girls and in turn, girls grow up to make two-thirds of the world's 875 million illiterate adults.

Because girls are participating in much fewer numbers and for shorter periods, particular attention to girls is essential, not only for the development of the country but to fulfill the right of every child to education.
