Right here in the U.S., children are struggling in the classroom because they cannot see the board. Helen Keller International's ChildSight® program helps children succeed and achieve in school. HKI recognizes that eyeglasses are as essential to learning as pen, paper and books. Our innovative program serves at-risk children living in urban and rural poverty in five states across the country by offering free vision screenings and eyeglasses to "bring education into focus" and, by doing so, overcomes the two biggest barriers to childhood vision care: prohibitive cost and limited access. Since the program?s inception in 1994, ChildSight® has screened the vision of more than 1.7 million children in the United States and provided over 258,000 pairs of free eyeglasses to children in need.
