Background

Date Founded: 2007
Number of Staff: 2

Description of Services:
TWA supports academic programs, educational leadership initiatives, and community development training by placing experienced educators in underserved schools and community centers.

TWA educators engage in an exchange of ?best practices? with African faculty and community organizers. We believe that by integrating their experiences into curricula and educational programs after their return to the United States, these educators will enhance educational opportunities for children in the SF Bay Area and beyond.
History:
Teach with Africa was created by Marjorie and Larry Schlenoff in September, 2007, after they visited South Africa and recognized the dire teacher shortage that was standing in the way of genuine post-apartheid progress. From an idea scratched on a napkin, this grassroots organization grew rapidly with over 50 volunteers, and multiple professional, educational and corporate partners.
Accomplishments & Progress:
Twelve Fellows were funded and worked in an initial pilot project at the LEAP School in Cape Town, creating programs for education and teacher training, community and small business/entrepreneurship sustainability, and IT literacy. Upon their return, the Fellows are developing projects in their local schools and community agencies to ensure continuity and reciprocity.

Since 2007, TWA has sent nearly 80 educators to South Africa, directly reaching over 1000 students.
