Full Description

Description

In December 2008, WorldTeach began an exciting year long program that will send 20 volunteers to teach in public high schools in and around Kigali, Rwanda's capital and largest city. Kigali is situated in the center of the nation, and has been the economic, cultural, and transport hub of Rwanda since it became independent in 1962.

By partnering with the Ministry of Education of Rwanda, volunteers will teach English, math, science, and possibly other subjects at schools throughout this geographically small country of nearly ten million people. Most schools are bilingual, teaching in both French and English, although the native language is Kinyarwanda. Teachers are highly respected individuals throughout Rwanda.

Volunteers should also plan on running a variety of extra-curricular activities for the students, such as HIV/AIDS clubs (considering the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS throughout Africa), coaching sports teams, and getting involved in acting, singing, or library clubs.

Cost Details
The current program fee is US$7,990. Special matching grants of up to US$2,000 are available for those who fundraise at least that amount, which lowers the fee to US$5,990. This includes pre-departure information and preparation, roundtrip international airfare from a US gateway city (e.g. New York City or Washington DC- you will be responsible for transportation to this city and airport), one month in-country orientation including food, housing, and transportation, year-long health insurance, meals and housing during your year-long teaching service, and 24-hour field support from our in-country Field Director.

Language Needed
English (fluent)

Skills Needed/ Experience
WorldTeach's Rwanda program is open to qualified individuals who are native English speakers and possess a bachelor's degree (in any subject). Prior teaching experience is helpful but not required. Interest in Africa, teaching and international development is a plus. Successful volunteers should be mature, resourceful, and exhibit commitment to public service and community participation. It is essential that volunteers be flexible and open-minded, and are capable of adapting to new situations. A positive attitude, even in frustrating or difficult circumstances, is vital because this program is young!

Detailed Location Information
Rich in culture and ecological diversity, Rwanda is a mecca for academics and ecotourists alike. Though it experienced a tragic genocide more than a decade ago, today it is one of the safest countries in all of East Africa and attracts people from all over the world.

Volcanic mountains in the western portion of the country are home to the world's largest population of mountain gorillas. Rolling hills to the east give Rwanda one of its names, "the Land of a Thousand Hills" or "le Pays des Mille Collines." These hills cradle lakes and rivers and are covered with what looks like an endless green quilt of family farms. Also to the east is the lush Akagera Valley which gives Rwanda its second name, "The Source of the Nile."
