Description

WorldTeach volunteers will serve as Teaching Assistants for the university as well as in their Teaching and Learning Center as support staff. In addition, the volunteers will lead extra-curricular activities at the university. They will also be introduced to Bengali, the local culture of Bangladesh, and the cultures of the Access Academy students. As The Access Academy prepares underprivileged, rural, and refugee women from South and Southeast Asia who have been accepted to the new Asian University for Women.

Volunteers will teach English, math, science, and possibly basic computer skills. They will also serve as first line mentors, though they will have back up from counselors. They will also facilitate student clubs and extracurricular activities in areas of their own interests, e.g. yoga, dance, music, art and crafts.

 
Cost Details
This program is fully-funded by the Asian University for Women. There is a US$2,000 required deposit which will be refunded to volunteers upon completion of the program. During your stay, you will receive a stipend to cover daily living and teaching expenses.

Skills Needed/ Experience
Volunteers must be native English speakers and have a bachelor's degree. Successful candidates must be mature, culturally sensitive, and exhibit an interest in women's education and in Asia. Volunteers will be responsible for advising extracurricular student groups at the Access Academy in addition to their classroom assignments, and will have a deep commitment to empowering these highly talented Asian women from under-resourced backgrounds.
 
Detailed Location Information
Bangladesh is the most densely populated country on earth, with 146 million people in an area the size of Wisconsin. The capital, Dhaka, has over 10 million people. This small but important country is nestled east of India, on the Bay of Bengal, at the mouth of the Ganges River.

Volunteer teachers will also be housed in an apartment complex in Chittagong, a coastal city in southeast Bangladesh. Students will be housed separately in the same building. Volunteers will have their own private bedroom in a suite of three to four bedrooms, sharing a living room, kitchen, and bathroom with other teachers. These facilities will have running water. There will also be dining facilities on the ground floor, as well as gym/exercise facilities.
