Full Description

Description

Global Citizens Network is seeking volunteers to collaborate with the Nahua people in the state of Puebla, Mexico. Our partners are a women cooperative group from the indigenous Nahua community near Cuetzalan. Living in the state of Puebla, this women run group is involved in health development projects that benefit their families and larger community.

You will work side-by-side with a local Nahua women's health committee in building a small health clinic in the village of Chicueyaco. GCN participants will collaborate on the trip to see the completion of the work on the building painting, outhouse and electricity.

Although the clinic is not fully complete, the community has been using the clinic since 2005, offering immunizations and health care education to local people.

Detailed Location Information
In the hills of the Sierra Norte in the state of Puebla lies the village of Chicueyaco, home of the Nahua peoples. Located near the market towns of Huehuetla and Cuetzalan, respectively, the villages is truly off the beaten path. The area is lush with heavy vegetation at about 700 meters above sea level. The weather can be dramatic, alternately hot and humid with frequent rains in the summer months, cooler and drier in late fall and winter. This is a rural area, where roads wind around hidden valleys and small subsistence farms struggle to make ends meet. The region is about 3 1/2 hours northeast of the city of Puebla.
