| The indigenous Maya population in Guatemala is challenged by rural poverty and discrimination from government and the society at large. Global Citizens Network seeks volunteers to assist in projects that will promote youth empowerment and preserve Mayan traditions and language.
GCN has partnered with the NGO, La Asociacion Wajxaqib Aj, the Mayan Center for Peace in Cantel, Guatemala, whose goal is to fortify solidarity and peace among the communities. GCN teams are working side-by-side with the organization to support the work of the Mayan Cultural Center. Projects include improving road infrastructure and recording work of weavers.
Cantel is located in the western department of Quetzaltenango in Guatemala. Founded in 1580 A.D., Cantel has a population of 35,000 inhabitants, with 95% belonging to the K'iche' Mayan tradition.
The 10 to 15 day trip is is led by a trained GCN team leader. An integral component of the experience includes daily activities of cross-cultural learning.
