Description

Help save the beaches and reefs of a unique island chain.

The Bahamas are everyone's image of a tropical paradise. Think of warm, aqua blue waters, coral reefs, gentle breezes, and white sand beaches that stretch on seemingly forever. Just off the coast of Florida, stretching lazily across the Tropic of Cancer, this island chain has been surprisingly unmarred by development until recently. Biologists Dr. Kathleen Sullivan Sealey and Lester Flowers (College of the Bahamas) are developing powerful new tools to examine the effects of growing coastal development on the plants and animals living nearby. You can help them compare satellite photographs, featuring the fascinating swirls of coastal currents, to on-the-ground information. By mapping the distribution of changing coastal habitats, you will support sustainable development of these scenic isles.

Cost Details
Through a unique method of funding, 100% of your contribution is used to support research and exploration sponsored by Earthwatch Institute. By balancing costs across our program, we are able to assist some research that would not be self-supporting. Depending on the size and needs of your team, roughly 50% goes to field costs; 34% to advance planning, reconnaissance, team recruitment, and logistical support; and 16% is used for administrative support, communications, and post expedition follow-up. Please call 1-800-776-0188 for additional 2009 dates.

Skills Needed/ Experience
The researcher(s) and field staff will teach you everything you need to know once you arrive. Most tasks are not difficult, and you will quickly master them. Exceptions may be projects requiring scuba qualifications or high levels of fitness. The primary language spoken on all our projects is English, so no special language skills are required.

Detailed Location Information
You will gain a unique understanding of the natural communities of the Bahamas both above and below the waterline. You will measure the shape of the shore using modern GPS technology, and survey the diversity of amazing animals. You will help identify where different plants are found on the ground. Rotating crews may also transplant native plants, place artificial reefs in near shore waters, or record human environmental impacts. Be prepared for some spectacular snorkeling. Some teams will work out of George Town, others will work in Savannah Sound.Teams stay in houses or apartments with the luxury of air conditioning in the evenings. Teams prepare their own breakfasts and field lunches with some assistance in the preparation of dinners.
