The Big Picture
Although the education gap and women?s limited access to economic resources is an ongoing challenge in Afghanistan, the Women Micro-Enterprise Development Program enables women and disabled persons with instruction in essential vocational and business skills. This provides greater opportunity boost income at the household level. Specific trainings are provided in fields such as tailoring, poultry farming, beading, and beekeeping.
The program is implemented through the establishment of local Self Help Groups, which ensure women-in-need for vocational and business skills training classes. The groups also encourage attendance at workshops, provide a support network to address issues such as market access and start-up capital, and help connect individuals with similar business interests. Program participants also receive business start-up assistance to initiate home-based business activities.
RI implements women-targeted programs in Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman provinces.
