Background

Date Founded: 1981
Number of Staff: 400

Description of Services:
WaterAid works in rural, urban and peri-urban settings, on integrated projects that provide access to safe water (through simple technologies such as handpumps, spring protections or hand-dug wells), sanitation (through the construction of household and communal latrines) and hygiene education (training in key personal and domestic behaviors such as handwashing at critical times). WaterAid believes that it is vital for women to be actively involved in all stages of these projects.

WaterAid's policy work is always informed by our extensive field experience, enabling us to influence regional, national and international governments to act more effectively in the area of water and sanitation.
History:
WaterAid America was founded in 2003 to support WaterAid's vision of a world in which everyone has access to safe water and sanitation. Originally founded in 1981, WaterAid international has member offices in Australia, Sweden and London.

Our ambition is that by 2015, a further 25 million people will have gained access to clean water, health and sanitation and we will reach 100 million more through our advocacy efforts.
Accomplishments & Progress:
WaterAid has helped nearly 16 million people gain access to safe water since 1981. We have indirectly reached millions more through our advocacy and networking projects.

WaterAid has received many international awards including the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize.

Today, WaterAid has expanded its projects from Africa and Asia to Latin America, growing from 17 country projects to 27.

Just $25 is enough to help WaterAid continue to achieve milestones by providing those in need with access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene education. For more donation information, visit: www.wateraidamerica.org

Additional Background Information:
WaterAid & Women

WaterAid believes that it is vital for women to be actively involved in all stages of our projects, including the planning, construction and decision-making stages. The societies that WaterAid works in, though, are generally male-dominated and so extra care and attention has to be taken to ensure women are equally included in the projects.

Community members, including women, will form water committees to manage their water and sanitation facilities. They are responsible for the project maintenance and the collecting and banking of funds.

Women also often become hygiene educators - they are able to talk to other women freely. They receive basic training in sanitation and hygiene and then spread these messages throughout their community.

Involving women in projects has a positive impact on their positions in the community. By having an important role, such as hygiene educator, water committee member, or sanitation block attendant, the woman's status is enhanced.
Local Partners:
