The Big Picture
With a life expectancy of just 48 years and a 19% infant mortality rate, health is one of Mali's greatest concerns. The Ouelessebougou Alliance believes that the best way to improve health is to help villages create their own health solutions. This is why the Alliance invests in training village health agents and matrons and helps them create their own 3-year village health plans. Since 2005, 13 villages have begun and in some cases fully completed a Village Health Plan, with remarkable results.
In addition to Village Health Plans, the Alliance provides essential health training for 48 village health workers attend each year. This year a special nutrition training will be provided for matrons as babies and infants continue to be threatened by mal-nutrition. The trainings will be led by health professionals from Utah who will travel to Ouelessebougou in February, 2012. Other training topics will include: neo-natal resuscitation, wound care, AIDS awareness, and water purification.
