The Big Picture
Solar cookers are one of the few existing smokeless, renewable-energy cooking technologies. An affordable solar cooker can reduce fuelwood use by one third, alleviating deforestation and harmful carbon dioxide emissions and improving human health through solar water pasteurization, reduction of exposure to indoor air pollution, improved nutrition, and relief from the physical demands and risk associated with fuelwood collection.
The Nairobi office and field offices in the communities we serve provide training and support to a network of solar cooker representatives. These representatives demonstrate the use of solar cookers at markets, schools, churches, and public events.
The Sunny Solutions project started in 2003 as a pilot project in a rural area of western Kenya, near Lake Victoria. As of May 2005, a new CooKit was introduced for sale in Nyakach that can be assembled locally by solar cooker representatives.
