The Big Picture
Solar cooking is the cleanest, healthiest and most environmentally friendly of all cooking methods, and the fuel is free. In impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the traditional cooking method of open fires fueled by wood or charcoal results in health-damaging, inhaled black smoke and contributes to deforestation and land degradation, as well as greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. SHE, Inc. partners with the non-profit Grupo Jaragua (GJ) in the DR in their Sun Oven distribution and adoption program to purchase locally-made Sun Ovens for distribution in rural communities. GJ?s Solar Chefs cook daily with Sun Ovens to demonstrate solar cooking and feed those at their community center in Oviedo. They also train other communities throughout the region in the use of Sun Ovens distributed through the program. GJ?s Solar Chef, Olga, also runs a solar cake-baking business. Your contributions help us get Sun Ovens to families that need them most
Impact of Your Donation
Donations purchase Sun Ovens for Dominican and Haitian families. The Sun Ovens are locally manufactured according to Fair Trade standards by the Dominican triple-bottom-line company, El Fuego del Sol. The price of a complete Sun oven is $279. For a limited time, a matching grant permits one Sun Oven to be donated to a family for each U.S. $119 contributed to SHE, Inc. A donation of $49 can provide a set of 3 cooking pots designed for the Sun Oven. We welcome your donations of any amount.
