The Big Picture
Papa's House does not have hot water or any refrigerator. Moreover, the food is prepared in a kitchen with limited facilities, currently a two-gas burner cook top. Solar energy provides a clean, efficient source for heating water and preparing food. A company in Nepal, Lotus Energy, specializes in solar energy. Solar water heaters could be purchased, which would not only improve hygiene, but the hot water would be welcome for showering in the winter months. Solar cookers could be used for the preparation of the food, reducing energy costs and improving the nutrition of the children. (See the Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal for information on Solar Parabolic Cookers.) Also, solar refrigerators have been developed, and could be purchased to store food. In a poor country with electric power outages greater reliance on solar energy makes sense.
Impact of Your Donation
Donations will be used to purchase solar heaters to heat the water for cleaning and showering, for solar cookers to prepare the food, and for solar refrigerators to store the food. Solar cookers can be purchased for between $100 and $150. Solar refrigerators might run approximately $1000. Solar water heaters would make up the remaining expenditures.
