Help Build Change reach their fundraising goal by their deadline: 1 Jun 2010.
Goal: $330,000
  $160,000 raised

The Big Picture

69,122 killed. 17,991 missing. 373,606 injured. 200,000 buildings destroyed including 7,000 schools, over 2 million homeless after the May 12 magnitude 7.9 earthquake. So much of this devastating loss could have been prevented with better building design and construction. In rural Sichuan, Build Change is (1) assisting homeowners to select the type of house (timber, confined masonry) and drawing a layout that meets their needs, budget and plot size, (2) providing detailed design drawings, contract templates and instructions on signing a complete contract with a contractor so the homeowner?s rights can be protected, (3) giving hands-on construction training before and during the construction process, to build skills and empower homeowners to check materials and construction quality themselves, (4) distributing simple posters and booklets on earthquake-resistant construction, and (5) holding training courses for engineers and local government officials.

Impact of Your Donation

Build Change is wrapping up a successful program supporting homeowners to rebuild safe houses following the May 12, 2008 Sichuan earthquake. We need your support to disseminate lessons learned throughout China before the next earthquake strikes. Support us to (1) expand training programs for government officials on how to design and inspect earthquake resistant rural homes, and (2) roll out training courses, curricula, and a prestigious service program for technical high schools.
