Background

Date Founded: 1990
Number of Staff: 22

Description of Services:
Seeds of Learning works with communities in Nicaragua and El Salvador to help build much needed schools. Central American community members and US volunteers work together to mix cement, lay bricks, tie rebar, and form friendships and memories that last a lifetime. We invite volunteers to participate in 1 - 2 week work groups to learn, share, and build. We also offer primary, secondary, and university scholarships to students in Nicaragua and El Salvador who have scarce economic resources.
History:
Seeds of Learning (SOL) was formed in response to the dire needs in the area of education in 1990 in Nicaragua. At this time, SOL worked to build school desks with rural communities. We also worked in an adult literacy program. Later, from the requests of the communities with whom we worked, we began building small schools with volunteers from the community and volunteers from the US.
Accomplishments & Progress:
To date, SOL has built 105 classrooms in 35 schools. We have built over 2000 school desks. We also have had over 1180 work group volunteers travel to Nicaragua and/or El Salvador to learn about and from the people and help to build schools. We welcome over 4000 students and teachers who have participated in our sister school program, increasing cross cultural understanding. We have also granted over 700 scholarships to primary, secondary, and university students.
