Excessive bleeding (or postpartum hemorrhage) is the leading cause of maternal death in the world. Because of adequate access to medicines in developed countries, most women are unaware of the condition that takes the lives of 130,000 mothers each year. 99% of the women who die from postpartum hemorrhage are in developing countries, primarily in Africa. Misoprostol tablets are simply taken orally as a preventative measure immediately after delivery of the newborn(s). Especially in countries where access to contraception is tragically missing, providing a safe delivery should be considered a woman's right.
