Quick Facts

Safe Passage works with the poorest at-risk children of families working in the Guatemala City garbage dump. Within a safe and caring environment, we provide a comprehensive and integrated program that fosters hope, good health, educational achievement, self-sufficiency, self esteem and confidence. Our primary focus is on creating opportunities and dignity through the power of education.

Focus Areas: Children, Education, Poverty
Countries Served: Guatemala

Background

Date Founded: 1999
Number of Staff: 90

Description of Services:
Our programs are designed so children can gain skills needed to obtain stable jobs, be self sufficient & lead their families out of poverty in a dignified, permanent way. With financial support from Safe Passage, each child attends school for the half-day term and comes to us for educational reinforcement, care & supervision. Children receive assistance with homework and activities that reinforce school concepts. They participate in art, music, sports & recreational activities, English classes & computer instruction. We provide nutritional support, medical attention, vocational training & weekend clubs for girls, boys & mothers. The early intervention program serves children 2-3 years old, and adult literacy helps our children?s mothers.
History:
In 1999 a woman from Maine, Hanley Denning, went to Guatemala to study Spanish. There she met the children working in the dump and decided she needed to help. She sold her car and computer to fund a program that would enable the children to attend school. Many people told her it couldn?t be done, but a priest let her use an old church building to get started. Local gangs repeatedly stole her school supplies and the police were too afraid to interfere. But Hanley persisted, inviting everyone she knew to visit and help. Today the program operates with twenty full-time volunteers who work with local teachers, social workers and other staff. In addition, 400 visitors arrive every year to participate in a week of service at Safe Passage.
Accomplishments & Progress:
The program has moved from the old dilapidated church to two modern and secure educational centers near the dump. Safe Passage today provides the services and support to guide 500 young people into school and onto graduation. Above all, Safe Passage brings consistent nurturing to these youngsters that the world has abandoned and a belief that each one deserves a chance to escape poverty with dignity.

Hanley Denning was killed in a tragic automobile accident in January, 2008, but thanks to thousands of donors, hundreds of active volunteers, and a dedicated staff, her dream endures, stronger than ever.
