The Big Picture
In rural Nepal, an historic tradition, called Kamlari, permitted destitute families to sell their daughter?s labor. Now, however, the Nepal government has banned the practice. Yet, many families still carry on the tradition, gaining little more than $50 a year for each daughter sold into bonded servitude.
The Nepal Youth Foundation (NYF) developed a program that provides the family with a goat or pig as substitution for the daughter?s wages and brings the girl home. NYF then ensures that the daughter gains access to education, which, in turn, assures she will be of more value as a member of the family household.
Since 2000, this program, called the Indentured Daughters Program (IDP), has rescued more than 14,500 girls from the practice of Kamlari. The project's goal is to completely eliminate the Kamlari custom.
Impact of Your Donation
$100 rescues a young girl from bonded servitude. This donation purchases a piglet or goat for the family. It also supports educating families about the dangers of selling their daughters, pays to train new teachers and enlarge classrooms, and supports a widespread public awareness campaign about child slavery.
