Background

Date Founded: 1990
Number of Staff: 523

Description of Services:
RI's programs bridge the gap between immediate emergency relief and long-term community development through innovative humanitarian programming. The organization designs its programs with the input and participation of target beneficiary groups such as women, children and the elderly, whose special needs are often neglected in disasters.
History:
Founded in 1990 in response to the earthquke in Iran, Relief International has carried out relief and development operations in countries across the globe. These operations often follow the same process: RI responds to a humanitarian crisis with immediate disaster relief, and maintains a presence in the area for years, implementing long-term sustainability programs.
Accomplishments & Progress:
RI has responded to the crisis in Darfur and now serves more than 50,000 at the Zam Zam clinic in North Darfur.

RI has empowered women widowed by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2005 Kashmir earthquake to support their families through micro-credit loans and business training.

In Niger, RI implemented sustainable agricultural programs that had a measurable impact in combating a famine that left nearly 3 million people in danger of starvation.

Additional Information

Additional Background Information:
The organization prides itself on being among the first to arrive when disaster strikes? and one of the last to leave. With more than 17 years of experience in crisis situations around the world, RI has demonstrated that while disasters always have a negative impact on their victims, they can also provide the groundwork for long term social change. RI consults closely with local communities to ensure that its programs do not impose solutions from the outside, but rather address long term needs by working from the ground up. This grassroots approach proves effective in fostering an environment of self-help and sustainability and supports the organization?s mission of serving forgotten victims around the world.
