High in the Andes Mountains, rural Bolivian families typically make their living subsistence farming meager 1-2 acre plots of land and earning less than a dollar a day. There are only a few months of the year with sufficient rainfall to harvest crops.
Mano a Mano partners with these communities to construct large-scale agricultural water reservoirs that allow crops to be grown year-round, resulting in better quality and a higher yield. Currently we are constructing a reservoir in Sancayani, Bolivia, which when complete will provide water for farming, drinking, and livestock for 4,000 families. As with all of our projects, long-term sustainability is a priority; the community has created a water cooperative to collect fees for maintenance and manage water distribution. With greater yields income improves - in our 3 water reservoirs completed to date, income for these families has doubled or tripled. As the communities tell us, "water is life."
