Lack of access to clean drinking water is a serious problem in Haiti, with close to half of Haiti?s population living without a reliable source of potable water. Drinking unsanitary water causes diarrhea and other water borne diseases, much of which accounts for high mortality rates among children under the age of five. These preventable illnesses can be significantly reduced with the gift of a water cistern. Haiti is lucky in that it receives substantial amounts of rainfall throughout the year. Cisterns provide a way to capture and store over 4,500 gallons of rainwater, providing communities with a clean water source and saving women and girls countless hours from walking to retrieve water.
