Quick Facts

Mayan women traditionally cook on open fires inside their small homes. They and their children breathe in dangerous smoke and often are seriously burned. Some children develop lung problems that lead to death because of daily inhalation of the dangerous smoke. The stove you sponsor will provide proper ventilation of smoke out of the house and keep small children away from an open fire on the home's floor. Providing a special stove means they use 70% less wood, which also saves the forests and allows children more time going to school and less on gathering wood - a back-breaking daily activity. Villagers who receive a stove are trained on how to install and use the stove. Families contribute a small portion toward the cost of the stove.
