The Big Picture
80% of blindness is treatable or preventable using techniques easily accessible in developed countries; solutions to prevent malnutrition have been available for decades.
HKI programs combat malnutrition, cataract, trachoma, onchocerciasis (river blindness) and refractive error. HKI trains surgeons, nurses and community health workers, and develops basic eye health education programs with government counterparts and local NGOs to address cataract. To prevent onchocerciasis, HKI trains community members to distribute an annual dose of the drug Mectizan®. To eradicate blinding trachoma, HKI implements the WHO-approved SAFE strategy focusing on promoting face-washing and providing access to clean water to prevent the transmission of the disease. In the U.S. and abroad, ChildSight® offers free vision screenings and eyeglasses to children who need them.
HKI's nutrition programs focus on vitamin A and other micronutrient supplementation, homestead food production and food fortification.
