The Big Picture
On September 30, 2009, a Mw7.6 earthquake hit near Padang, home of Build Change's main office in Indonesia. All Build Change staff are safe, but over 1,100 people were killed, most by collapse of poorly designed and built buildings. Over 100,000 homes must be rebuilt.
Build Change had been working in this area prior to the earthquake. None of the homes that met Build Change's minimum standard for earthquake safety sustained damage.
Build Change is now partnering with Mercy Corps, Catholic Relief Services, CHF International, CARE International Indonesia, Oxfam and Save the Children to train homeowners and builders to build safe houses. But most of these relief agencies will finish their programs in the next few months, before most homeowners start rebuilding permanent houses. We need your support to put trained professionals in the villages, working hand-in-hand with homeowners to rebuild safe houses.
Impact of Your Donation
(1) Hire, train and deploy local professionals to work directly with homeowners and builders to rebuild an earthquake-resistant house
(2) Permanently upgrade the skills of local builders through intensive, hands-on construction training programs
(3) Print and distribute simple design and construction guides and posters
(4) Train technical school students on design and construction of earthquake-resistant houses.
