The Big Picture
Support a community-building initiative among former warring tribes on the Kenya-Tanzania border. Petals school has the vision of creating a community of purpose among Luo and Kuria tribes by providing providing primary and secondary education to impoverished villagers, and eventually providing both a college and vocational skills center. Coop Trust funding to local women is a part of this initiative, as well as agricultural and income-generating projects designed to help the school become self-sustaining. Most of the schools 160 students are either orphans or non-paying children. Inspite of this, Petals is ranked academically #1 in its district. Its immediate needs are to feed the children and fund faculty salaries. Its most pressing building project is to build facilities for 9-12th grades. Income producing initiatives include purchase of a tractor, a school van and lease of arible land for planting.
