Background

Date Founded: 2005
Number of Staff: 15

Description of Services:
Currently 51 children, ranging in ages from 5 to 17, reside in Papa's House I and II in Dhapasi, Nepal. In rooms of three and four, the children have individual beds, three meals a day, and attend a nearby English-speaking school. In addition, the children of Papa's House are learning how to sew and cook. The children receive regular dental and health care. Papa's House III provides for 26 Kamalari girls, rescued by SWAN (Society Welfare Action Nepal), a local charity in Lamahi, Nepal. NOH also supports two remote schools in the Ramechhap district, funding the educational supplies and teachers and providing for hot lunch programs for over 140 village school children.
History:
Nepal Orphans Home (NOH) was founded in 2005 by Michael Hess. As a volunteer in Nepal in 2004, Michael was moved by the plight of the children he witnessed living in poverty, often exploited and vulnerable to the ongoing political instability and social upheaval in Nepal. He vowed to help. Selling his property in Florida, Michael returned to Nepal and established a children's home, Papa's House, in Dhapasi. The mission has increased to two more Papa's Houses, a second nearby in Dhapasi and a third in Lamahi in the Dang district of western Nepal. NOH also supports two village schools in the Ramechhap district in the mountains far from Kathmandu. Please see www.nepalorphanshome.org for a history of Papa's House, including news and updates.
Accomplishments & Progress:
Nepal Orphans Home (NOH) began in 2005 with a dozen children in a two-story building in Dhapasi, Nepal. In addition, a primary school operated out of the home. By 2008 Papa's House had grown to 51 children living in two four-story buildings in Dhapasi. The children attend the Skylark school, a nearby English-speaking school. Another children's home was opened by Papa's House in Lamahi in western Nepal for 26 Kamalari girls who were rescued from sale into domestic servitude, factory work, or the sex trade. In 2008, NOH also began supporting two remote schools in the Ramechhap district, providing for books, supplies and teachers, as well as a daily hot lunch for over 140 students. Please see these two projects for additional description.

Additional Background Information:
Nepal Orphans Home is a 501(c)3 public charity incorporated in North Carolina. The founder, Michael (Papa) Hess, has lived at Papa's House in Dhapasi, Nepal from the beginning, directing the daily operations of Nepal Orphans Home (NOH). In the beginning Michael largely funded NOH through his own resources. (www.nepalorphanshome.org) and have been inspired by Papa's House. Nepal Orphans Home also has an active volunteer program, Volunteer Nepal, which strives to serve and enhance the relationship between the Nepalese people and committed, compassionate volunteers.
