Background

Date Founded: 2005
Number of Staff: 16

Description of Services:
Nepal Orphans Home (NOH) provides for 125 children, ranging in ages from 5 to 18, living in our four Papa's Houses in Dhapasi, in the Kathmandu Valley. In rooms of three and four, the children have individual beds, three meals a day, and attend a nearby English-speaking school. The children receive regular dental and health care. More than half of the Papa's House children are former kamlaris, girls rescued from indentured servitude by Society Welfare Action Nepal, an indigenous NGO in western Nepal. In addition, NOH helps two remote schools, funding educational supplies and teachers and hot lunch programs for over 100 village children. Volunteers in Volunteer Nepal, the NOH affiliate, provide additional services to the poor.
History:
Nepal Orphans Home (NOH) was founded in 2005 by Michael Hess. As a volunteer in Nepal in 2004, Michael was moved by the plight of the children he witnessed living in poverty. He vowed to help. Selling his home in Florida and investing his savings, Michael returned to Nepal and established a children's home, Papa's House, in Dhapasi. Each year the mission has expanded to help more children. NOH currently operates four homes in Dhapasi, all within a short walking distance from the main campus where Papa's Samanjasya (Harmony) House is located. Even with all the growth in the mission of NOH, one constant has been the exceptional care our children receive. Papa's House children are secure, happy members of a loving family.
Accomplishments & Progress:
From an initial home with two dozen children in Dhapasi in 2005, NOH has grown to 120 children living in four homes (Papa's Houses) in Dhapasi in 2012: Samanjasya (Harmony) House, Kalpana (Imagine) House, and Gumba (Sanctuary) House for girls, and Sambhav (Possibilities) House for boys. NOH receives support from four foundations: Possible Worlds, Sanctuary for Kids, Imagine, and Giuliani. Volunteer Nepal has grown from two dozen volunteers in 2007 to over one hundred twenty volunteers in 2011. Our compassionate, talented volunteers from around the world provide services to the poor in Nepal. NOH is also proud to be able to support village schools in Dhumrikaka and Bigu.

Additional Background Information:
Nepal Orphans Home is a 501(c)3 public charity incorporated in North Carolina. The founder, Michael (Papa) Hess, has lived at Papa's House in Dhapasi, Nepal from the outset, directing the daily operations of Nepal Orphans Home (NOH). In the beginning Michael funded NOH largely with his own resources.
