Quick Facts

The mission of Mobilize.org is to empower and invest in Millennials to create and implement solutions to social problems. Mobilize.org believes that in order to create long-term, sustainable and community based solutions to the challenges facing our generation, Millennials (those born between 1976 and 1996) must authentically engage their peers in identifying problems, proposing solutions, and working together to implement these solutions on their campuses and in their communities.

Background

Date Founded: 2002
Number of Staff: 7

Description of Services:
Our theory of change, entitled Democracy 2.0 begins with Millennials identifying problems at the local, state, or national levels. Once problems are identified, citizens must work collaboratively to purpose innovative solutions. It is the role of Mobilize.org to equip Millennials with the resources necessary to improve their democracy by implementing their solutions.

During Summits, Millennials gather and discuss challenges facing our generation. Summit participants develop and propose sustainable solutions to address issues such as financial literacy, unemployment and environmental causes. Utilizing keypad voting technology, the top proposals are chosen by Summit participants and receive Mobilize.org Awards.
History:
Mobilize.org was founded 10 years ago on the campus of UC Berkeley with the question, "If we aren't advocating for ourselves, who will?" Over the past 10 years, we have expanded from a campus effort in Northern California with 10 students into a national movement that has as its mission to make democracy work better by investing in Millennial-driven solutions.
Accomplishments & Progress:
On July 4, 2007 Mobilize.org launched Democracy 2.0, a campaign to call attention to the ways that our democratic process and institutions were both serving and failing to serve the interests of people in our country, specifically members of the Millennial Generation. These failures, as well as proposed solutions and action plans, were condensed in a document called the Democracy 2.0 Declaration. It reads: "We, the Millennial Generation, are uniquely positioned to call attention to today's issues and shape the future based on the great legacy we have inherited. We realize that as young people we are expected to be the leaders of tomorrow, but we understand that as citizens we are called to be the leaders of today."
