The Big Picture
Microloans have proven to be a highly successful poverty-reduction tool. We will give small loans to impoverished women in Peru to help them realize their dreams of being self-sufficient.
Our program will be modeled after other projects such as those sponsored by the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. We will chose needy women, usually in groups of three-five women, and provide small loans for businesses of their choosing. Loan terms will be flexible and credit will be offered to those with no collateral or credit history.
We have already solicited loan applications from several women in Virgen de Chapi, Peru. Some examples of the businesses they wish to form are:
- Buy an industrial strength sewing machine to sew clothing for sale in the city. - Purchase guinea pigs, food, and corral-building materials to start a small-scale guinea pig husbandry operation. - Buy tables, chairs, cooking supplies, food, etc., to start a small restaurant.
Impact of Your Donation
Most of our micro loans will be for amounts of around $1,000. We hope to be able to offer around 10 loans this year.
After screening potential recipients, we will use these donations to fund their projects. Once the loans are repaid, the money will be recycled back into the community in the form of more microloans. This means that your donation will continue working long after the original date of the gift.
