Quick Facts

To create partnerships with impoverished Bolivian communities that improve health and increase economic well-being. This mission is accomplished through the work of Mano a Mano International Partners, based in Minnesota, and three partner organizations in Bolivia.

Focus Areas: Economic Development, Education, Health
Countries Served: Bolivia

Background

Date Founded: 1994
Number of Staff: 2

Description of Services:
In the U.S., Mano a Mano collects, packs and ships surplus medical supplies and equipment to be distributed in Bolivia, as well as fundraising for all operations. In Bolivia, Mano a Mano works with rural communities and local government to build infrastructure for healthcare, education and economic development. This includes building schools, clinics, teacher housing, community bathrooms, roads, large-scale agricultural water reservoirs, and providing emergency air rescue.
History:
Mano a Mano International Partners (Spanish for "hand to hand") was founded on the simple proposition that medical inventory that would otherwise be wasted should be routed to places where it can literally mean the difference between life and death. With an initial focus on collecting and distributing medical surplus, Mano a Mano has expanded and partners with Bolivian communities to build infrastructure projects that improveve health and economic well-being.
Accomplishments & Progress:
As of August 2010, Mano a Mano has constructed 112 rural community clinics, with 10-12 new clinics built per year. In 2009, we reached our 2-millionth patient visit to a Mano a Mano clinic, and we have sent over 2,700,000 pounds of surplus medical supplies from the US to Bolivia since 1994, valued conservatively at over $10 million. We recently completed our largest water reservoir project in Choquechampi which provides water for 5,000 people.

Additional Information

Additional Background Information:
Mano a Mano's model focuses on empowering local communities and leveraging all available resources to build infrastructure projects that are requested by the communities themselves and are viable long-term. With all projects part of the agreement is that the community and local government will take over administration of the project. This is evident in our clinic program, where 100 of our 112 clinics are financially independent of Mano a Mano, and in our water projects, where water cooperatives are established that oversee fee collection and water distribution.
