Date Founded: 1973
Number of Staff: 30

Description of Services:
We offer a full range of literacy programs that teach adults to read, write and do basic math. Our teams of highly qualified teachers and dedicated and well-trained volunteers are committed to providing the best possible services to our students.

Our programs include:

Adult Basic Education (ABE): Beginning, intermediate and advanced students testing at grade levels of 0.0 to 5.9.

Pre-GED and GED (General Educational Development): Assisting more advanced students in preparation for the GED exam.

English For Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL): Adult learners are taught speaking, listening, writing, reading and grammatical structures of English.

Literacy Partners programs also include: Family, Health and Financial Literacy.
History:
Founded over thirty five years ago as Literacy Volunteers of New York City (LVNYC), Literacy Partners provides free basic skills instruction to thousands of adult learners. One of the oldest adult literacy programs in NYC, Literacy Partners was the pioneer in creating a formal training program for volunteer tutors to work successfully with student groups using advanced students to serve as mentors and peer tutors and measuring annual outcomes. Literacy Partners is the only Nationally accredited Adult literacy program in New York City.
Accomplishments & Progress:
During the past academic year, Literacy Partners served over 2,000 adult learners. Our long-standing commitment to assessment and outcomes is agency-wide, and we effectively evaluate and document student progress and program efficacy through testing scores, job readiness/employment skills and personal goals such as citizenship, parenting skills and improved health and financial literacy. Literacy Partners has had an unmatched record of success and a full continuum of literacy programs that meet or exceed accepted targets. We are uniquely qualified to help our students maximize their opportunities.

Donor and volunteer support is a critical ingredient in maintaining our free adult and family literacy classes. Your gift and support immediately benefits our programs and the thousands of men, women and families we teach. With newly acquired literacy skills, our adult students will lead better lives, read to their children and greatly improve their job prospects. Local Partners: Literacy Partners operates several learning centers (in addition to its headquarters on East 33rd Street in Manhattan) throughout New York City. Thanks largely to corporations and organizations that generously provide space, we are able to offer our students free learning-friendly, safe and welcoming environments in which they achieve their literacy goals.
