Background

Date Founded: 2003
Number of Staff: 2

Description of Services:
Provide families in mine-affected communities access to clean water

Improve the overall health of the communities

Elevate, empower and promote the status of women

History:
In 2003 Alison Bock founded Landmines Blow!®. The organization, originally created to raise awareness of landmines and their impact on civilians, grew to become a respected member of the non-governmental organization (NGO) community when they joined both the U. S. Department of State's Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement partnership program and The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) in 2004.

Accomplishments & Progress:
Phase I of Project Safe Water was completed in March of 2007. The project included the construction of ten wells in six villages in the Mong commune of Srey Snam district in Cambodia. These wells provide clean safe water to over 200 families (approximately 1,800 people). Additionally, Landmines Blow!® provides gardening tools to families so that they can plant vegetables. Our wells provide families with ongoing access to clean water which can be used for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing clothes, and feeding animals and chickens. The wastewater from the wells is used for home gardening.

Additional Information

Additional Background Information:
The Facts

About half of all villages in Cambodia contain landmines and UXO.

Cambodia has 45,000 recorded landmine survivors.

9.5 million Cambodian inhabitants do not have access to clean, uncontaminated drinking water.

Lack of access to safe water is one of the main factors contributing to the infant mortality rate.

Cambodia has the highest rates of infant and child mortality in Southeast Asia.

Diarrhea from unsafe water is the number one killer of children under the age of five.

When clean water comes to a village, the infant and child death rate plummets, and the disease rate for all persons is reduced. No single type of intervention has greater overall impact upon national development and public health than the provision of safe drinking water.

Landmines Blow!® is a volunteer driven organization. There are no salaried employees. Thanks to an amazing network of volunteers, your donations go directly to fund specific projects - not costly overhead.
