Quick Facts

Hurah, Inc. supports the non-violent, non-partisan human rights mission of our Haitian partner, AUMOHD, with money, with physical accompaniment, and with international advocacy. AUMOHD's mission is to provide free legal assistance, community training, and advocacy for the most poor of Haiti, principally in the capital, Port-Au-Prince.

Focus Areas: Human Rights
Countries Served: Haiti

Background

Date Founded: 2005
Number of Staff: 0

Description of Services:
We provide financial aid for organizational needs, i.e. gasoline, phones, internet access, office equipment, court fees etc. We also recruit and orient volunteer accompaniers to provide support on the ground with our partners in Haiti as they work with victims of human rights abuses. We also provide public relations and international advocacy for AUMOHD's goals for human rights. We have provided solar powered communications to maintain connections.
History:
Tom Luce, Hurah President and Atty. Evel Fanfan, President of AUMOHD met by chance in April 2004 at the national penitentiary. At that point the country was in turmoil with the ouster of President Aristide. Jails were being filled up with political prisoners. The two men agreed to set up a partnership and Tom returned for a month in June 04 to learn the basics of accompanying Atty Fanfan around the many spots for frontline human rights defense: clogged juvenile jails, courts, violent streets, and police stations.
Accomplishments & Progress:
In June 04 Hurah President , Tom Luce, worked with AUMOHD to obtain the release of their first illegally detained prisoner, a young 20 year old, Reagan Lolo. In 05 Atty. Fanfan, Pres. of AUMOHD came to speak of the human rights abuses in his country and Hurah, Inc. began to organize formally in July. Tom worked with the formation of the first Community Human Rights Council (CHRC) in Cité Soleil. The CHRC model gathers community leaders and victims into a local training and advocacy force to deal with preventing abuses and doing follow-up work after abuses.

In the following years 2 more CHRC's were formed. A worse massacre and home burning occurred and AUMOHD continues to be the sole support for these and hundreds of other victims.

Additional Information

Additional Background Information:
Hurah, Inc. and its partner, AUMOHD, are dedicated to strict non-violence and non-partisanship as a way of life. We have created a unique model, the Community Human Rights Council (CHRC) in 4 major slums of Port-Au-Prince, comprised of community leaders (church, school, civic) and victims of human rights abuse. The CHRC engages in training for human rights advocacy and promotes non-violent work for social justice within and between the communities.
