The Big Picture
The street kids of Port-au-Prince are at the bottom of the heap in the poorest country in the Americas. But there is a beacon of hope in this sea of despair. A group of former street kids, now students in high school and university, have started an orphanage. They are giving Haiti's street kids a place to sleep, food to eat, and a chance to study. The orphanage was once the biggest in the city, but several years ago it was closed and the building was later looted. Recently, a group of former orphans who had grown up there re-opened the shelter to street kids. Every day, they and other volunteers give classes to a growing number of street children, most of whom sleep on the floor of the facility at night.
Impact of Your Donation
The donation will be used to house, clothe, feed and provide an education to Port-au-Prince's street kids. The orphanage is a large building, but it was abandoned and there are is no furniture. Needs include mattresses, benches and tables, kitchen supplies, food, school supplies, clothes, and small stipends for the volunteers.
