Heartland International's training programs focus on NGO capacity building; sustainable economic development & entrepreneurship; development of viable advocacy campaigns; civic education; the role of political parties in a democracy; transparency in government; freedom of information/investigative journalism; campaign strategies--free and fair elections; strategies for strengthening human rights and legal defense skills training of trainers.
History:
Heartland International was founded in 1989 to leverage the resources of Chicago and the MIdwest to empower emerging leaders and citizens to create positive change in society through experiential educationa dn professional development training programs. The organization has developed programs for the Department of State and USAID.
Accomplishments & Progress:
Have worked with over 1500 participants in 31 countries over the past 22 years.

Developed a national association in Tanzania for women business owners.

Currently developing a program for young entrepreneurs training in Kenya.

Working on joint projects with NGO leaders in Turkey and the US as well as Belize/Nicaragua and the US.

Provided education reform/civic education professional development training for Egypt, Indonesia, East Africa.

Currently implementing a program with Turkish NGO leaders to build capacity and establish linkages with Chicago-based leaders of NGOs. Joint projects will be developed in the areas of women's empowerment, youth employment and environmental awareness.

Additional Background Information:
HOME STAY HOSTS: Need Chicago-area residents only to host preselected international participants in their homes for 1to 6 week periods during Chicago programs; Hosts must live within a 45-minute commute of downtown and be accessible to public transportation. Home hospitality is an important tool in cross-cultural understanding.

INTERNSHIPS: 10-week unpaid internships are available to qualified undergraduate, graduate and post graduate students in the Chicago office.

DONATIONS: Grants that fund our programs do not cover all costs.
Specifically donations are sought for:
1. establishing Young Entrepreneurs Clubs in Kenya and expanding the training around Kenya.

2. projects being developed jointly between Turkish and US NGOs;
