Heartland Alliance International Programs focus on the following key strategic efforts:

Health Care: Developing health care services with priority concerns for the needs of women, children, and the mentally ill, specializing in the treatment of survivors of trauma or human rights abuses.

Human Rights Protections: Advancing local and international human rights protections with a focus on protecting individuals from abuse, violence, or persecution through documentation and research, strengthening the rule of law, and building capacity.

Staff and volunteers from around the world provide an array of inter-connected and culturally competent health, legal, and resettlement services.
History:
Heartland Alliance was founded as Travelers Aid in Chicago, IL in 1888. In the mid-1960s, it merged with the Immigrants' Protective League and operated as Travelers and Immigrants Aid for many years. In the 1980s, the organization expanded to serve others in need; to reflect this expansion, in the mid-1990s the organization became Heartland Alliance. Today, Heartland Alliance provides a wide array of services that empower those in crisis to create change in their lives. Heartland Alliance collaborates with elected officials, government agencies, and other nonprofits to create policies that advance the rights of all people.
Accomplishments & Progress:
2001 - Present: Provide training & technical assistance to community-based torture treatment center in Guatemala.

2003 - 2005: Training & technical assistance on torture treatment in Haiti.

2004 - Present: Training community mental health workers in Iraq to work with torture survivors.

Ongoing: Consultation with human rights and health care providers in Great Lakes region of Africa and tsunami-affected communities in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
