Families of La Ceibita do not have access to clean water, obtaining their drinking water from shallow, unlined, and uncovered hand-dug wells or open springs, often distant from their village.
The families requested assistance from El Porvenir to help build a hand-dug well and agreed to provide the labor for the project. Your donation will help El Porvenir provide technical experience and funding for materials to build a covered, sanitary well that will dramatically improve the life and health of the entire village. The hand-dug wells will be circled with a concrete or brick ring, and lined with rocks, bricks and/or cement. They will be covered with a concrete lid, and fitted with a low technology ?rope pump? made in Nicaragua, which local residents can easily and cheaply repair. The wells will also be enclosed with a fence to keep out animals. The families agree to maintain the project and the land where the well is to be constructed will be legalized in the name of the community.
Our mission at El Porvenir or "the future" is to improve the standard of living of poor people in rural Nicaragua through sustainable self-help water, sanitation and reforestation projects.
