Background

Date Founded: 2005
Number of Staff: 8

Description of Services:
With projects in Burma, Iraq, Sierra Leone and U.S. foreign policy, the GJC applies a unique twofold approach to its human rights work. The GJC equips local leaders in project countries with the legal strategies to promote justice and equality rights using international law. The GJC also focuses on the UN Security Council?s enforcement of international humanitarian law.
History:
The GJC has conducted 3 international legal trainings in Iraq and Jordan. One training on gender rights and international law for the Iraq High Tribunal (IHT) and Iraqi women leaders, led to the unprecedented decision by the IHT to apply some of the highest international standards for redressing gender crimes in the world. We trained and provided counsel this year to five governments in Central Asia, human rights groups in Colombia, human rights and government-in-exile communities at the Burma/Thai border, UK Parliamentarians, Supreme Court Judges in Nicaragua, UNSC member countries, and other influential bodies.

Accomplishments & Progress:
Recently the Global Justice Center launched the "August 12 Campaign", on the 62nd Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, urging President Obama to issue an executive order lifting U.S. abortion restrictions on humanitarian aid for girls and women raped in armed conflict. The campaign received an editorial in the New York Times on, September 8th, 2011 titled "Humanitarian Aid for Rape Victims."
