Background

Date Founded: 1994
Number of Staff: 18

Description of Services:
GFC makes small grants to innovative community-based organizations working with the world?s vulnerable children and youth. Grassroots programs are rooted in community initiative and driven by entrepreneurial leaders. Supporting them at a relatively early stage in their development also maximizes the value and impact of our investment.

Through our Global Media Ventures program, we harness the power of books, film, and documentary photography to celebrate community and diversity and meet the challenges faced by young people all over the world. Our photography fellowship documents the children served by our grantee partners all over the world.
History:
After graduating from Bryn Mawr College, Maya Ajmera traveled throughout Southeast and South Asia on a Rotary Fellowship. During her year of travel, Maya recognized the important work of local grassroots organizations. The impactful work of the Train Platform Schools in Bhubaneswar, bringing schooling to some of India?s neediest children, convinced Maya of the power of small amounts of money in the developing world. After studying international development and economics at Duke University, Maya received a seed grant from Echoing Green and set out to build The Global Fund for Children. GFC awarded its first grants totaling $3,000 in 1997 and has since given over 950 grants to some of the best community-based organizations in the world.
Accomplishments & Progress:
-In fiscal year 2005?2006, we were active in 56 of the world?s 193 countries.
-Since our first grants in 1997, we have given grants valued at $9.3 million, to 304 grantee partners in 65 countries. More than 1 million children have benefited from our grants.
-The Global Fund for Children Books collection has over 20 titles.
-In May 2006, GFC received an Oprah?s Book Club Award given by Oprah?s Angel Network in honor of Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel. The $50,000 award allows us to distribute 17,000 of our books free to children in war-torn countries and areas where poverty or violence remains a daily reality.
-Our books have collectively received 27 honors and awards.

Additional Information

Additional Background Information:
Our experience has proved that small grants can have a big impact. Our goal is to build the capacity of community-based organizations, individually and collectively, to serve and advocate for the rights and needs of vulnerable children and youth in their communities and beyond. We do not expect our grants to alter national-level indicators. Rather, our grants incrementally strengthen the social fabric that envelops and supports the next generation, child by child, organization by organization, and community by community.
