Description of Services:
Vegetarian food relief, vegan food relief, disaster relief, education for the poor, shelter for orphans, counseling, sustainability education, cow protection, health education, medical care and volunteerism. Co-ordinate and expand the distribution of pure vegan/vegetarian meals all over the world. Produce promotional and training materials for the development of Food for Life projects worldwide. Represent Food for Life to the government, media and public through public lectures, newspaper articles, the Internet, and mail. Promote the Vedic food culture and the art of hospitality based on spiritual equality Coordinate and sponsor emergency relief efforts conducted by Food for Life volunteers
History:
FOOD FOR LIFE is a nonprofit organization, bringing food and life to the needy of the world through the liberal distribution of pure vegetarian meals. The project started in 1974 when an elderly Indian swami, Srila Prabhupada, implored his yoga students not to allow anyone within a ten mile radius of his ashram to go hungry. The program grew quickly, and today Food for Life is active in over 50 countries worldwide. Food for Life Global volunteers are made up of vegans, vegetarians, and the socially conscious public. Food for Life Global is a non-sectarian organization. Everyone is welcome to participate in our community projects.
Accomplishments & Progress:
Volunteers serve more than 1,500,000 free vegan & vegetarian meals daily to schools for the poor, orphanages; on the streets of major cities, and to disaster areas, making FOOD FOR LIFE the largest vegan/vegetarian food relief in the world. Food for Life's Mid-Day Meal Program provides daily hot meals for school children throughout India. Recognizing the relationship between two of India?s most pressing problems?hunger and education?the service seeks to disrupt the vicious cycle that emerges: education is the long-term solution to poverty and hunger, but education is lost on starving children.
