The Big Picture
The tragedy of blindness and malnutrition is avoidable; solutions have been available for decades. 75% of all blindness is either preventable or treatable using techniques easily accessible in developed countries.
HKI's major areas of expertise are Eye Health and Nutrition. HKI fights cataract by training surgeons, nurses and community health workers, and developing basic eye health education programs with government counterparts and local NGOs. HKI combats onchocerciasis by training community members to distribute an annual dose of the drug Mectizan®. To eradicate blinding trachoma, HKI implements the WHO-approved SAFE strategy focusing on promoting face-washing and providing access to clean water to prevent the transmission of the disease. In the U.S. and abroad, ChildSight® offers free vision screenings and eyeglasses to children who need them.
HKI's nutrition programs focus on vitamin A and other micronutrient supplementation, homestead food production and food fortification.
