The Big Picture
More than twenty years after the AIDS epidemic first began affecting Kenya, AIDS-related mortality has begun to affect Kenya?s demographic profile. As a result, the number of grandparent-headed households has grown rapidly, presenting new challenges to Kenya's social and economic development. Many of the children being cared for by grandparents have not been tested for HIV but may be HIV positive and without health care. Ember Kenya staff have been assisting grandparents in Funyula, Kenya with the emotional and financial challenges of raising children for over a year. The mainstay of the project is a network of grandparents who meet regularly and to support and educate one another on the various issues they face. Ember Kenya facilitates these support networks, training active grandparents to organize their peers and discuss problems and potential solutions.
Impact of Your Donation
The Ember Project continues to work with grandparents to assess their skills and resources, providing assistance wherever possible to foster family self-sufficiency. Staff also promote self-help projects aimed at income generation, such as creating small fruit tree nurseries, goat and chicken farming, and niche horticultural farming. The Ember Project will work with other rural development NGOs to conduct market surveys to assure that participants sell their produce at the best price.
