Quick Facts

There is a shortage of safe water in rural Iganga. Most people in the area resort to fetching water from open sources, such as the abundant swamps, which are contaminated by animals, pesticides from local farming, and the runoff from communities that are often without toilet facilities. To avoid using open sources, women and children often have to walk long distances to the nearest safe water source. These conditions cause cyclical bouts of severe illness; diarrheal disease, largely caused by unsafe water and bad sanitation, causes 17% of all deaths for children under five.
Uganda Village Project is helping to provide access to safe, clean water in Iganga District through our Safe Water program.
Our model for well construction mobilizes local resources in order to maximize community participation and ownership while minimizing the need for external support and financing. We also work with the district government, to lower construction costs and to train a village Water and Sanitation Committee which is responsible for all future maintenance of the well.
Please help reduce the rate of disease and death in our rural communities by giving the gift of safe water. You can do this by constructing an entire well for $1,200, or half of a well for $600. We will send you and your gift recipients updates, pictures, and videos from the well construction!
