Background

Date Founded: 1952
Number of Staff: 2400

Description of Services:
CHF International continues to be driven by a humanitarian mission and guided by high standards of accountability and performance. To this end, our programs are designed to be realistic: we encourage communities to identify their own priorities and work with them to set achievable objectives that advance their overall goals. Our programs are adapted to each distinct cultural and social context.
History:
CHF International was originally established as the Foundation for Cooperative Housing (FCH) in 1952 seeking to help low- and moderate- income families in America through the construction of affordable housing. Following our inception, we sponsored over 60,000 units of cooperative housing in 35 states across the US. In 1962, our strong record of accomplishment within the US caught the attention of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Our first overseas programs were focused on housing microfinance in Central America. In 1998, we began to market ourselves as CHF International to reflect our overseas focus.

We now work in more than 25 countries each year, supporting our world's most vulnerable populations.
Accomplishments & Progress:
2011

The Honduran National Environmental Award - CHF International was awarded the highest environmental award of Honduras for the design and implementation of highly effective water harvesting projects in the dry tropics of Southern Honduras.

The Pergamino Rosa (Rose Parchment) Award - The Pergamino Rosa award is bestowed by the Sexual Diversity Committee of Honduras upon organizations that have contributed and worked with the GLBT population to improve the lives of this historically excluded and marginalized community. CHF was honored for its work with its local partner, Kukulcán, targeting the MSM (men who have sex with men) population.

As an international organization we work with local partners in all of our communities around the world. CHF also engages with local organizations, faith-based, community-based, or otherwise, in our project design and implementation. They bring local knowledge and expertise to our work. At the same time, we work to build their technical capacity. Their help and support is central to our success.
