The war between Muslim separatists and the Philippine government has plagued Mindanao for 40 years, affecting thousands of children and their families. The province of Sulu is one of the worst affected in the region. With one chair for six children, and practically no textbooks or school supplies, the Sulu education system is highly underdeveloped in Southeast Asia, The dropout rate is around 65 percent by the sixth grade, with children at risk of joining violent or extremist groups. Art is a means for children to reclaim and preserve the joy of life. Children can use art materials to express their feelings in a positive way, rather than submitting to terrorist recruitment groups in the area.
