International NGO Terminology
- NGO (non-governmental organization)
- This term generally applies to all non-profit organizations not affiliated with the government. In the U.S. we call our NGOs non-profits.
- U.S. Based Organizations
- These NGOs are organizations based in the United States. This status ensures a tax write-off for the donor. For example, The Global Fund for Women, Grameen Foundation and Room to Read are all U.S. based organizations with international focus.
- Independent Organizations
- These NGOs are grassroots, internationally-based organizations.
- Project
- This is a specific program executed under the umbrella of an NGO. Projects usually have a specific program, funding needs, and time deadlines.
